Remove Standby from Windows XP Shutdown
Q: How can I remove the Standby option (or button) that appears when I shut down Windows XP?
A: Some systems don't react well when put into standby mode. If yours is such a one, it makes sense to disable that option using this Registry tweak:
Click Start, click Run, enter regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\ACPI\Parameters.
Right-click in the right-hand pane and choose New | DWORD Value
Name the value Attributes.
Double-click it to set its data.
Making sure Hexadecimal is selected, enter 70
Click OK, exit the Registry editor, and reboot.
Now when you choose Turn Off Computer from the XP Start menu, you won't be able to select Standby by accident
